Development plans sought for cemetery chapels
Kirklees Council is asking for development ideas for eight disused cemetery chapels across the district.

A firm of architects has drawn up a plan for the possible renovation and re-use of the chapels which include:

Cleckheaton Old Cemetery, Whitcliffe Road
Liversedge Cemetery, Clough Lane, Liversedge
Two chapels at Dewsbury Cemetery, Heckmondwike Road
Twin chapels at Heckmondwike Cemetery, Cemetery Road
Twin chapels at Edgerton Cemetery, Cemetery Road, Edgerton, Huddersfield

Organisations are being invited to submit innovative but sensitive development proposals for long-term sustainable uses for the buildings which are currently in a poor state of repair.

All except the chapel at Liversedge are listed buildings and the development proposals would need to take into account the historic setting of each building.

Cllr Molly Walton, Joint Cabinet member for Regeneration, Environment, Transport, said: “The council has been looking at options for the chapels for some time and a project board has decided that offering them for sale is the best way to preserve them. They have been offered to various bodies at different times, including the university, but the chapels were not suitable for their purposes. As it would cost at least £2 million for the council to renovate and maintain them all, it is felt that this is the best option.”

The full report from One 17 AD Architects is available on the Kirklees Council website at http://www.kirklees.gov.uk/answers/land-property/land-propertyonsale.shtml

The deadline for development proposals is April 24.
