  New affordable homes for Batley
An innovative scheme for more affordable homes in Batley has been agreed by Kirklees Council, showing that affordable housing for couples and small families within new residential developments is still high on the council’s agenda.

Kirklees Council Housing Services are working in partnership with Johnnie Johnson Housing Trust to make the scheme a reality for 12 couples or families who are trying to access housing during the current economic climate.

The houses will be purchased, subject to grant money being made available from the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA), to enable Johnnie Johnson Housing Trust to directly buy the homes from developer, George Watson Homes. Additional grant funding will be given by the council to supplement this. This special partnership arrangement will benefit couples and families who may otherwise not have access to affordable homes in Batley.

“Cllr Andrew Marchington, Joint Lead Cabinet Member for Adults and Communities said: “We are looking at innovative ways to try to secure new affordable homes during the credit crunch at a time when planning applications for new development are slowing down and developers are being cautious about starting new schemes.

“By supporting the purchase of homes from the market, we want to secure affordable homes for the future as well as helping the local economy by helping developers with their cash-flow and retaining construction jobs.

“The Batley scheme will build on the success of a pilot project off Long Hill Road, Huddersfield, where 25 new homes have been purchased from the market by Jephson Homes.

“The council is looking to work in partnership to provide as many affordable homes as possible on development sites, and is pleased to support arrangements like this to make it happen.”
