Recycling scheme for town centre businesses |
|
 |
Kirklees Council is introducing a recycling scheme for businesses in Huddersfield and Dewsbury town centres from April to help them minimise the waste they produce.
The new collection scheme for recyclable waste is to be offered to trade customers within the Huddersfield and Dewsbury ring roads.
Huddersfield businesses will be able to recycle paper including newspapers, magazines, plastic bottles, clean food tins, drinks cans and cardboard. Dewsbury businesses will be able to recycle cardboard and paper only.
Participating businesses will be provided with an additional wheeled bin clearly marked for recycling and available in sizes ranging from 240 litres to 1,100 litres.
The charges for the additional bins and recycling collection service could be offset by a reduction in the normal commercial waste collection service carried out by the council. Unfortunately the recycling markets are currently poor so the cost of the new service cannot be fully offset.
Recyclable material collected from Huddersfield town centre will be taken to the sorting plant on Emerald Street Huddersfield. Material collected from Dewsbury town centre businesses will be taken directly to a local paper recycling merchant.
Cllr Molly Walton, Joint Cabinet member for Environment, said: “This is an excellent opportunity for businesses to improve their environmental performance by investing just a little effort in part sorting their waste. The initial cost should be offset by the reduction in general waste collections.
“The scheme has been introduced in response to a huge demand for this kind of service from town centre retailers and businesses. We are asking companies to sign up for a 6 month trial and hope that following the success of this trial, we can look to expand the scheme out to other areas”.
Town centre trade waste business customers will shortly be receiving a leaflet inviting them to join the scheme. Alternatively town centre business proprietors interested in taking part should contact Huddersfield 01484 223153 or Dewsbury 01924 325003.
